A Tale of Two Heart Rates

I came into last ski season in pretty good shape, got an early jump on the year (11/14 first day on snow), and trained hard to do the Virtual Boulder Mountain Tour. This year due to a series of health issues I can into the ski season out of shape, a late start, and had to try and train myself back into shape (Bad idea). My goal was to just finish the Virtual Boulder Mountain Tour this year, which I (barely) did, knocked knees and all. My longest ski of the year was two weeks prior (25Km). It was a great day, Jug Mountain Ranch did a great job of grooming the trails, I had fast skis, and it was warm and sunny for the whole ski. But the fitness level shows in the heart rates. If you are well trained then your heart rate will maintain a steady level throughout the event (2021), if you are not in shape then your heart rate will steadily climb (2022) even though it doesn’t seem like you are working harder.

Hurdles and goals are just part of life. I know the hurdles will keep coming but I am smiling because I did finish my goal of skiing 30km and I also had another important goal happen this week, I got my 40-year certificate and pin from PSIA-AASI (Professional Ski Instructors of America and American Association of Snowboard Instructors). I am lucky enough that I am still coaching and teaching other people to have fun and perhaps set goals skiing.
