A fishing kayak is a stable sit-on-top kayak that has peddles. So, when you are seriously fishing you don’t have to paddle. I love paddling, so I usually spend time doing both. But when the fishing is slow, I also love paddling around and doing some bird watching. Last season I spotted these Black-crowned Night Herons. This was a first-time bird for me, although it turns out they are fairly widespread in the North and South America. So, last week was my return to the area that I spotted them last year. Luckily, they were back again and in the same spot. There must be a rookery someplace close by. True to their name these birds are not very active during the day. I paddled right by them the first time past and didn’t see them because they don’t move and blend in so well with the sticks and branches. But when I came by them again, they flew up and landed on a branch. Hard to see in my photo, but I think their vivid red eyes and yellow legs would make an interesting aspect for future artwork
