Leave it up to a country that is full of the descendants (or current) of people that traveled halfway across the world to get away from their parents to come up with American Halloween. Our celebrations come from theCeltic tradition Samhain (a Gaelic word pronounced “SAH-win”) which celebrated the end of the harvest and the beginning of winter, halfway between the Autumn Equinox and the Winter Solstice. The barrier between the spirit world and the physical world is thin. For many this occasion was taken to honor their ancestors. So, for a time I tried to honor the maternal lineage in my family (my mother, her mothers, her mother’s mother, etc.). I would call my mother every Samhain and ask her to tell me stories of everyone she could remember. As she is no longer with me and her mother was born on October 31st, I will spend my day honoring those that came before, especially my mother and grandmother. ArtworkbyLlona.com
