Okay, I am stumped on this one but don’t know a lot about Elk behavior. So we are paddling down the river and there is an animal drinking in the water ahead. It turns out to be an elk calf, still spotted. As I paddle past it, the calf keeps its lips near the water and doesn’t move. My husband paddles past about 5 minutes later and the calf doesn’t change positions. We stop to eat lunch down river and the calf is still there after we finish. So I hike back up on the other side of the river from the calf and it stays put, so I am fearful that the calf is caught on something. So we paddle back upstream to see if we can free it but as my husband walks toward it, the calf finally walks away from the river and up on land. So why did it remain in the river and why did it keep it lips in the water the whole time? It seems like an odd place for a mother to tell it’s young to hide? There was no sign of an adult elk nearby. I hope someone can shed light on my elk mystery.
