Owyhee River
This is my last piece from 2021. The Owyhee River is one of my favorite places to fish in the spring. It is a special place in so many ways. As you drive across the Idaho/Oregon border through green bean fields and other farms, sage brush grasslands, and finally drop into this river valley, the scenery changes into a rainbow of colors. This river is known for its Brown Trout. Because it is extremely heavily fished, these are very smart trout. (I usually don’t catch much on this river). You must be a very good fly fisherman to catch anything especially a sizeable fish. I still love being in this spot on the river.
As with so many of my pieces I am also capturing a moment in time. My hope is that there will be people fishing this river in the years to come. My hope is that Oregon will recognize what a precious place this is and begin to do what is needed to preserve the fishery. With Boise doubling in size in such a short time, the pressure on this river is enormous. The river really needs to be closed during spawning season, be single barbless hook, and catch and release. The combination of low snowpack, hot summers, and fishing pressure could prove to be too much for this fishery. Perhaps artwork can make a difference. www.artworkbyllona.com
