Yes, I know that robins are supposed to be a sign of spring and they showed up 2 weeks ago or so, but early this week the first pair of sandhill cranes flew over calling madly. Two were dancing in a field on my way home today. Their calls are so unique, gravely and raspy. They are very distinctive birds especially in flight. Large in size, they can still be lithe and graceful at times. Even though the snow is leaving very early this year, it will still be a while before we are going to see nesting sandhills in fields of camas lilies. I like to share my work, “Spring on Farm to Market” each year when I see the sandhills for the first time. It reminds me of the day I noticed the sandhills intertwined in a field of flowers. They have become my harbingers-of-spring. Robins that love mowed lawns and worms, are no match to the sandhills out in the fields of wild vegetation. Artwork by Llona
