Skiing with your Dog

We are very fortunate in McCall, that many of the ski trails in our area allow dogs. Cross country skiing with a dog is so much fun for the owner and the dog. This is a piece I did in 2022 called “The Activity Barn”. The Activity Barn and the Pathways ski trail is a great place to take a dog and a really nice place for an easy ski or for beginners. These trails are groomed by volunteers (mostly Todd) and there is no trail fee, although I highly recommend donating to the Pathways organization to help support this trail.

Ok here comes my soapbox. The luxury we have being able to ski with our dogs here on groomed trails, does come with a responsibility. The subtitle to my artwork is, Pick up After Your Dog. Pathways has installed dog bag dispensers at both trailheads. Bear Basin also has dog bags at the trailhead. Flinging things off to the side is not the answer, if you have ever visited a ski trail in the spring as the snow is melting, it can be quite disgusting. I have a waist belt that holds a couple of water bottles. I used one of the water bottle holders for a special pouch that you put the used potty bag in, so you can carry it out. I also have a small dispenser that clips to the belt that contains a roll of potty bags. It really isn’t that difficult. No one wants to ski through your dog’s refuse or pick up after your dog. I must admit that my dog sneaks on in on me. I have had others offended by my dog. Although seldom, dog doo happens. But the best we can do as dog owners is to try to carry it out, so that others can enjoy a day of skiing.

Watermark is not part of original or giclees.
