The window to backpack into the mountains is narrow, usually beginning sometime in July and ending in October. The Bear Grass (it’s actually a lily) was in full bloom everywhere this year because of the wet spring. The wet spring also made for a buggy evening. If you look over to the right of the photo you can see the destination lake. This, like many hikes, was a fairly easy hike before the fires. Now hiking requires going over or around lots of downed trees. As we gaze down on the landscape, we ponder how many years it will be before this will once again be a wooded hike with once burned trees, now decayed and part of the forest floor. 100 years? In the meantime, we can enjoy the vast views and the bear grass.
